The Birchall Leadership Award is presented by the Royal Military Colleges Club of Canada Foundation Inc. to honour the memory of 2364 Air Commodore Leonard J. Birchall CM, OBE, DFC, OO, CD [1915-2004], the "Saviour of Ceylon". The 2017 recipient of this prestigious award is Colonel Chris Hadfield, internationally-known Canadian astronaut and commander of the International Space Station. The 2nd annual fundraising concert entitled ‘Gig For Ghana’ will take place at the Clayton Hotel, Limerick on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at 7:30pm. The concert will feature the beloved musical astronaut Col. (Ret’d) Chris Hadfield, Denis Allen, Norman Morrissey and the Kings of Connaught. All funds raised on the night will go directly to Ghana Medical Help to support the delivery of a medical aid project collaboratively founded between this charity, the UL Hospital Group and UL. Since his retirement from active duty, Chris Hadfield has appeared worldwide onstage and television. In August and September he returns to the BBC to host “Astronauts: Do you Have What it Takes?” The six -part series takes 12 applicants through a process of challenges devised by Chris to test their suitability to become an astronaut. Do they have the right stuff? Chris Hadfield undoubtedly does. During his five month stay on the International Space Station, he became something of an extra-planetary media star. He not only shared extraordinary photos, he tweeted the Queen and William Shatner, talked to school children, strummed his guitar and provided demonstration videos about daily life. On his last day on the ISS, he posted a farewell music video online – his version of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” It instantly went viral, garnering millions of view quickly. It has now been viewed almost 37 million times. An evening with Chris Hadfield will open your eyes to dream the impossible.
